I have a question. Who has the right of way when two drivers are turning onto the same road from opposite directions?

Nneka J.

Dear Nneka,

It depends on the signs and signals, who has the right of way when two drivers are turning onto the same road from opposite directions. If they each have a green light, they each have equal right of way because there are two equal rules: a) the left turner must not turn left if unsafe, and b) the right turner must yield to anyone already "within" the intersection, such as a left turner who has already begun to turn left.

So the answer is: whoever starts to turn first.

If both have stop signs instead of green lights, both must stop before they turn (stop sign,) and whoever begins to proceed past the stop sign first has the right of way because whoever proceeds first is therefore "in" the intersection first, and the other must by law yield to whoever is "in" the intersection, no matter left turn or right turn.

If both turn at exactly the same time they won't crash because the right turner is closer to the lane, so there's no problem. If there is a crash it is because the left-turner started to turn before the right-turner began to turn and the right-turner didn't yield to the left-turner.

If the right-turner has a yield sign, the left-turner always goes first.

Good question!
